Dr. Arrese is Full Professor of Medicine and Head of the Gastroenterology Department at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. His research has focused for more than two decades on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of steatotic liver disease, cholestasis, and liver fibrogenesis, with particular attention to the epidemiology and clinical implications of NAFLD/MASLD and ALD in Latin American populations.
He has co-authored foundational regional guidance documents, including the ALEH practice guidance for MASLD and the ALEH position statement on steatotic liver disease nomenclature. He has published over 315] peer-reviewed papers (h-index of 77 and more than 40,963 citations) and serves on the editorial boards of several international hepatology journals. He is the vice president of ALEH and past president of the Chilean Association of Hepatology, and holds leadership roles in regional and global liver disease initiatives.
